Genie in a bottle

Genie in a bottle

I wish I had a genie in a bottle who can grant me three wishes. With these three wishes, my whole life can change for the better.

Give me lots of money so I can pay off my debts and not have to keep scringing. Plus I can give more to those who need money.

Give me and my loved ones good health and happiness in life.

Give me a generous heart and a loving soul.

A weekend to remember

A weekend to remember

After weeks of lulling around, I’ve finally had an active week!

The Body Worlds exhibition is in town again so decided to go check it out on Saturday. I visited the exhibition previously when it came to Singapore about five years ago and was thoroughly fascinated by it. I must say I was still fascinated this time around – there are new exhibits of course, including animals!

BodyWorlds

Some people have asked if the corpses are scary – all I can say is, you’ve gotta go see for yourself to determine. I personally didn’t think it was a scary experience, in fact I believe it is highly educational… for adults and kids who are OLD ENOUGH.

Why am I stressing on this, you may ask? Well that’s because there were these very fragile exhibits where foetuses were cradled by a small black cushion. I was appalled to see how a maid/parent would allow her toddler to stand on the seat of her pram and climb all over these exhibits. There is completely no respect for the exhibits or the real human foetuses on display. Then there was another teenage boy who purposely knocked right into the exhibit which made it shake and almost topple the foetus off the cushion! Was super pissed off.

Other than that, I have seen a few responsible parents educating their young primary school-aged children, who looked like they knew how to respect the dead themselves. I attribute it all to good upbringing.

Nonetheless, I really enjoyed the exhibitions. My experience was enhanced by one of the four volunteers who provided us quite a bit of information. Kudos to her! One of the things we asked was, how did they get some of the bodies to balance only on one foot? Apparently, there is a weight holding the foot down, but to ensure the body stays balanced, the centre of gravity is calculated and the body is positioned in such a way that it does not topple. This volunteer also informed us that the exhibitors were planning to display a Noah’s Ark in the future… Looking forward to that!

We spent Sunday at Steph’s place eating and eating and joking and watching a movie.  We celebrated my mum’s birthday and had chocolate cheese cake. That was interesting.  And as usual I fell asleep on the couch… :) Had a very long day – in my books.

I’m off from work this Friday, can’t wait!

Packing a punch

Packing a punch

I have a bad habit.

I like to have the last word. Even if I’m dealing with authority or higher management. I don’t need weapons to start or end a war. My only weapons are my words, and I am almost secretly delirious to announce that I tend to win such wars of words.

But it’s a problem for me. Somehow or other, I am not afraid of authority. A job title is but just a rank given to you for every step you climb on the work ladder. Yes, I do give the person that respect. However, I am not someone who cowers in a corner when I get bullied. It’s my right to stand up for myself – even if it means I’m ‘talking back’ to someone of a higher authority.

At age 15, I told off a policeman who had been unreasonable towards me. No doubt I got the last word, because he dared not say anything to my face. I have ‘gently’ told off my boss’ boss when she sent me an email to complain about me. She copied my big boss  and her big boss so I replied her and copied all of them as well. I told her I was just trying to be efficient and speed up the work and communication flow. Again, I got the last word because nobody said a word after that.

All this is not about being mean. I have seen friends and colleagues who are so nice and who respect authority so much that they end up getting bullied. This is not what I stand for. I stand for equality and humanity, regardless of age or work experience etc.

I could be one of the nicest people around, but don’t mind the punch I packed in my bag – just in case it’s needed.

Review of Up in 3D

Review of Up in 3D

As mentioned previously, the boyfriend has been bugging me to watch Up with him. I’ve been shrugging it off due to disinterest, but because of our deal, I accompanied him to watch the movie yesterday night.

I have never caught a movie in 3D before and was caught a bit offguard when Cathay employees handed out these eyeglasses to us. The eyeglasses were too large for me and they kept falling off my face and that really annoyed me. Other than that, I was excited to experience firsthand watching the movie in 3D.

J&C Up
(Spoilers ahead)

Up 3D

The movie itself was based on a simple plot. Old man going on an extreme adventure to fulfill his dreams (and his late wife’s). It was difficult to fathom how an old man who depended heavily on a walking stick could ‘carry’ his house on his back and walk a long distance upon a rocky ground. I know it’s a cartoon – but I can’t get over this.

My colleagues were telling me how touching the story was and yadda yadda. Alright, yes, the fact that the old guy would go so far to fulfill the biggest dreams of his wife was touching. Well I can concede and agree that their life story was really sweet and romantic…. (Although I also can’t get over how the old foggy would make his weak wife climb up a steep hill)

But the fact is – the old guy is dumb. Why? Because he made an assumption and went too far ahead with it and almost got himself and others killed in the process. He assumed that his wife’s childhood ambition would stretch till her after-life, even though he had many opportunities to look into her adventure book and find out if she had changed her to-do list. Well, he found out eventually that she did. Her adult adventure was to spend her life with him – which she fulfilled.

As for the childhood hero who turned into a raging madman – I can only conclude this: Don’t over-idolise your heroes; they may not be who you think they are!

You will probably have thought I’m a hater by now. The reality is, I think Up is an interesting movie which I feel teaches realistic values through its unrealistic story. I did love the funny scenes – the naivety of Dog, the jovialness of Russell, the squeaky voice of Alpha the scary dog, and the colourful bird called Kevin.

Watching Up in 3D was in itself an adventure for me. The movie wasn’t too shabby, but I still prefer Dreamworks Animation!
